Why Life Insurance Matters More Than You Think

Most people who put off buying life insurance are not being careless. They are making an understandable mistake: they are thinking about the premium as a cost to themselves, rather than as a transfer of risk away from their family.

The question the policy actually answers

If your income stopped tomorrow, how long could your household continue as it is? For most families the honest answer is a few months. Life insurance converts that few months into a decade or more.

Why age matters so much

Premiums are set at entry age and stay level for the term. A term policy bought at 30 costs a fraction of the same cover bought at 45, and the difference compounds across thirty years of payments. Underwriting is also simpler while you are healthy — waiting until a condition appears often means loading, exclusions or decline.

How much is enough

A common starting point is ten to fifteen times annual income, adjusted for outstanding loans and the number of years dependants would need support. That is a rule of thumb, not a plan. A proper need analysis accounts for education costs, a spouse’s earning capacity and existing cover.

The most common mistake

Buying a savings-linked policy with a small sum assured and believing the family is protected. A policy that pays out five lakh when the household needs a crore is not protection — it is a savings account with paperwork.
