The Annual Insurance Review: Fifteen Minutes That Prevents Most Failures

6 August 2026 Financial Planning 1 min read

Insurance is bought against a snapshot of your life, and then life moves. The policy does not move with it unless somebody makes it.

What changes the answer

A raise, a new loan, a child, an ageing parent moving in, a business taken on, a personal guarantee signed. Each of these changes the cover you need, and none of them notifies your insurer.

The checklist

Has income changed materially? Any new liabilities? Any new dependants? Are all premiums current and no policy lapsed? Is the nominee correct on every policy? Are contact and bank details current with each insurer? Has the health sum insured kept pace with medical inflation? Have any waiting periods now completed?

The one nobody thinks of

Does your family know which policies exist and where the documents are? A policy the family cannot find is functionally uninsured.

Make it a fixture

Pick a date — a birthday, the start of the financial year — and keep it. Our clients get an annual portfolio review as part of the relationship, and it is the single highest-value fifteen minutes in the whole arrangement.
